What is Ha-La Saturday?
After a week of learning in school and in cram, students should have some R&R (Rest and Relaxation) right? Well, not all parents agree. Weekends for some students mean more classes, more worksheets and more studying.
What many parents don't realize is that in order for students to retain the information learned during the week, they should take the weekend to use what they've learned, not through paperwork or more studying, but actually experiencing or feeling the things they've learned. By doing this, it'll help students to retain the information better.
Now, I can't speak for the chinese or math courses, and how to experience it or feeling it (not my area of expertise). But, with English, students should get the opportunity to use it. Especially when Taiwan doesn't have the English environment available for learning.
That's why we started HA-LA SATURDAY. During the two hours (I know it is not a lot) students play games in English. They use the English they know or whatever English they have learned and use it by playing games. The games we have are all imported from Germany, and it lets students learn to communicate with eachother through English.
We have students of various levels of English ability attending Ha-La. From beginners to intermediate students. Beginners will mostly listen and when they are comfortable, they would use some game English, like my turn, go, whose next, no.... Then we have the false intermediate students, they would use half English and half Chinese. Finally, we have the intermediate students, they would use English (+95% of the time). Sometimes they even argue in English, like, you can't do that, you're cheating, and blah, blah, blah...
Anways, what I'm trying to say is that don't just let your kids, learn, learn, learn without taking a break and actually putting what they've learned into use. It'll be a waste of learning and waste of money. Especially, if you're paying more money for them to at afterschool English Institutions. That's all. Peace out!

What's Next?
Hi all,
Sorry for not posting sooner. I've been busy with my classes.
Well, the Halloween party was a success. All the kids performed really well.
We had a little problem with our play though. We didn't have mics prepared
for the performers. So, the audience couldn't hear very well. But, the kids did
their best to let the audience hear their voices. The rap that our kids did was really
funny too. Good job guys, and gals. Keep it up!
So, what's next? STORY TELLING, that's what! Yes, Pao-Jen's annual story telling is

for my students. I'm sure my students know

and rap. How'd I know? Well... once when we were
having class, I said something about trick or treat, all
of a sudden, my kids started rapping the song they

Trick or Treat...Smell my feet...
Trick or treat, smell my feet,
give me something food to eat,
if you don't I won't care,
I will pull down your underwear.
Welcome to our Mix-up show,
where we learn to use what we know.
Learning is fun, practicing is funk,
using it... is what we want.
